How to manage your team #1: Be yourself

Metallic artwork by Pat Juneau, hanging in my office.

After 30 years supervising employees, here’s my first of 24 lessons on How to Manage Your Team.

#1: Be Yourself. Too often, promoted employees suddenly assume a more serious tone than the collegial one that caught the attention of management in the first place. That’s a mistake.

Your teammates will detect when you aren’t being authentic and note how you’ve changed since being promoted. Begin to tap those same instincts that helped you become a leader: sense what’s going on with your team. They will look to you for measured direction. You will earn their trust – one day at a time.
