How to manage your team #11: Mission

The best teams focus on a mission

Your team will want to know where you want to take them. That’s called your mission statement.

Your mission statement can be simple, such as always submitting error-free written or analytical reports or as lofty as securing the next great $1 billion unicorn as a client. Make it broad enough to be inspiring and realistic enough your team can see they can contribute to its achievement.

Whatever you choose, make sure you include your team in developing the words. It shouldn’t just come from you or, worse, your boss. Don’t make the mission too wordy. Short and pithy is best.
