When I was a new manager, I imagined myself as a change agent, ready to break eggs and champion my team and department. Here’s what I learned: it’s not just a matter of advocating your causes consistently and creatively – you have to do a lot consensus- building .

After I gathered my team’s input, I spent years trying to change the way other departments integrated with us by presenting to them in conference rooms and managers’ meetings.

Rather I should have visited others at their desks – yes, my team, but even more important, those who worked with our team within the company.
