You'll need to resist the urge to talk too much football.

Decades ago, an unflattering article about a law firm listed difficulties women faced in its culture. One female attorney complained she had to debate intricate details of recent Virginia-North Carolina basketball games to enter her practice area’s inner circle.

If you’re going to tolerate a discussion of sports in your staff meetings, you’ll need to be able to pivot to other leagues to include teammates who aren’t fans of the favored teams.

Or even to other hobbies or topics, such as a recent TV episode or book. Otherwise, those outside your tribe will fear they are playing a fixed game.
