How to manage your team #24: Reflecting

When your teammate speaks, imagine yourself on the water, listening and reflecting

Active listening is essential at home and work. Earn your new team’s trust by demonstrating an intense ability to listen – and reflect.

Often when listening to others, we’re formulating how we’ll reply. Stop that. Instead, reflect what the other person just said to you. To accomplish this, you need to listen to their words and their emotions. Your response should always begin with something like: “If I understand you correctly, you are frustrated because you are …” and then summarize what they told you.

You’ll know you are successful when you hear them say these three words: “Yes, you’re right.”
